Important Tips:
Dangers are not over even when the water goes down. Do not endanger yourself or your family after a water event. Keep children and pets away. Try to protect yourself and your family from stress, fatigue, and water-related health hazards.
The following precautions will help neutralize the common water-related hazards, insuring a safe recovery process:
1. Determine Structural Stability
Determine whether your property is structurally safe to enter. Before entering your home or business, take a look at the ceiling and supporting walls. Do not enter if the ceiling is sagging due to water buildup or if walls have collapsed.
If you are not certain the building is safe or if you have any question regarding personal safety, stay out and have a professional make an assessment.
If the building is determined safe, walk in carefully and inspect indoor stability. Do not enter any deep standing water.
If your property is determined unsafe or you cannot live in your home while repairs are being made, make arrangements for temporary alternate lodging. Keep records of all additional expenses incurred as a result. Most insurance policies will cover additional living expenses.
2. Cut Off the Power Supply
Assume all power lines are active and functioning. Turn off the power to your unit by disabling the main circuit breaker panel even if the neighborhood power grid is down. The panel is usually installed in the garage, utility room, basement, or outdoors on the side of the home.
Do not remove excess water using regular household vacuums. Avoid using any electrical appliances especially while standing on wet carpets or floors.
If you choose to use a generator for temporary electricity supply, do not run it in an enclosed area. The generator's engine releases carbon monoxide that is extremely hazardous to health. Be sure to let the engine cool off before refueling and avoid using extension cords.
3. Turn Off the Water Supply
Turn off the main water supply. Locate the main valve and turn it clockwise to turn it off. You may need to use pliers or an adjustable wrench. The main water valve is usually located in the basement, near the water meter, or outside the building. If you can not complete this task yourself, contact a plumber immediately.
Do not use piped water until you are sure it is safe. Use bottled water or boiled water for washing, drinking, and cooking.
4. Turn Off the Gas Supply
Check for the odor of natural gas and shut off the gas supply lines. The main gas valve is usually located on the gas supply pipe, near the meter.
5. Beware of Animals
Watch out for stray pets, reptiles, and rodents that might have taken shelter in your property after being disturbed by the water. Be cautious of approaching any animal.Use a stick to poke through debris before removing it. Contact your local animal control officer for assistance
6. Use Protective Gear
In many cases of water damage events, water is contaminated with sewage, mud, and other debris, presenting health hazards. Protect yourself during clean up using protective gear such as:
- Disposable plastic gloves
- Respirator with a particulate filter, N-95 respirator, or half-face respirator with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter
- Goggles or protective eyewear
- Disposable full body clothing, coveralls, or a lab coat
- Head gear
- Rubber boots or foot coverings

Simple fires are fueled by pure fuels and generally result in complete combustion.
Complex fires are the most common and they are fueled by synthetic materials in carpets, furniture, toys, wiring, etc. and generally result in incomplete combustion and the production of soots and acid deposits.
Whether the type of fire you have, you need to get your life back together again. You now have two problems: How to clean smoke and soot soiling as well as the stubborn odors they generate.
There are different methods and techniques to accomplish that, but if you believe that the damage is too big to handle it yourself, please give us a call and we will help you to evaluate the damage and advise you if you need to call to your Insurance Company.
First Steps after a fire:
1. Put your safety first: fire may cause damage to the structure, short circuits in the electrical system and carry chemical hazards.
2. Secure your property and personal belongings from further damage.
After taking steps to protect and secure your property and personal belongings, the next important step is damage assessment.
Understanding the extent of the damage caused to the structure and personal belongings will help your insurance adjuster to efficiently process the damage claim.
What Can you do next:
Brush-vacuum loose soot particles from upholstery, drapes, and carpets.
Cover carpeted traffic areas with towels or old linens to prevent additional soiling.
Discard open food packages. The food could be contaminated.
If electrical service is off, clean out your freezer and refrigerator. Leave the doors propped open or place charcoal in the unit.
Send clothing with heavy smoke damage to a qualified professional dry cleaner who specializes in smoke damage.
Wipe residue from porcelain bath fixtures to prevent etching.
If the outside temperature is above 60 degrees and there is no water damage, open windows to reduce smoke odor.
If you have water damage, is really important to start the drying process as soon as possible, so it doesn’t become a mold problem.
What not to do:
Do not attempt to wash any papered or flat painted walls without consulting your professional cleaner.
Do not attempt to clean carpets or upholstered furniture. Incorrect procedures could increase damage.
Do not use electrical appliances that have been close to fire or water before having them checked.
Do not use ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet. A short circuit could result.
Try not to touch upholstery, walls and woodwork. The grease in your hands could permeate the soot, causing further damage.
Do not eat food that has been exposed to fire or smoke.
Smoke and soot can travel and penetrate into other rooms affecting paint, carpet, upholstery, drapes, clothing and any other family belongings. Fires are classified into two groups, simple and complex:

Concerns about indoor exposure to mold has been increasing as we become aware that exposure to mold can cause a variety of health effects and symptoms. The way to prevent mold is controlling moisture problems, but if you are experiencing a mold problem already, please let us help you.
At ServiClean Inc we have the tools, the knowledge and the experience necessary to get the job well done. We know how to handle every situation, from a small area to a whole house; remember that we will advise you about the protocol we need in your particular situation.
There is a lot of information about mold and mold exposure, this is just enough for you to see how important is to keep your house mold free.
Health Effects and Symptoms Associated with Mold
When moisture problems occur and mold growth results, building occupants may begin to report odors and a variety of health problems, such as headaches, breathing difficulties, skin irritation, allergic reactions, and aggravation of asthma symptoms; all of these symptoms could potentially be associated with mold exposure.
All molds have the potential to cause health effects. Molds produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases, toxins that may cause reactions in humans. The types and severity o symptoms depend, in part, on the types of mold present, the extent of an individual’s exposure, the ages of the individuals, and their existing sensitivities or allergies.
Molds in the Environment
Molds live in the soil, on plants, and on dead or decaying matter. Outdoors, molds play a key role in the breakdown of leaves, wood, and other plant debris. Molds belong to the kingdom Fungi, and unlike plants, they lack chlorophyll and must survive by digesting plant materials, using plant and other organic materials for food. Without molds, our environment would be overwhelmed with large amounts of dead plant matter.
Molds produce tiny spores to reproduce, just as some plants produce seeds. These mold spores can be found in both indoor and outdoor air, and settled on indoor and outdoor surfaces. When mold spores land on a damp spot, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Since molds gradually destroy the things they grow on, you can prevent damage to building materials and furnishings and save money by eliminating mold growth.
Moisture control is the key to mold control. Molds need both food and water to survive; since molds can digest most things, water is the factor that limits mold growth. Molds will often grow in damp or wet areas indoors. Common sites for indoor mold growth include bathroom tile, basement walls, areas around windows where moisture condenses, and near leaky water fountains or sinks. Common sources or causes of water or moisture problems include roof leaks, deferred maintenance, condensation associated with high humidity or cold spots in the building, localized flooding due to plumbing failures or heavy rains, slow leaks in plumbing fixtures, and malfunction or poor design of humidification systems. Uncontrolled humidity can also be a source of moisture leading to mold growth, particularly in hot, humid climates.
Cleanup Methods
These are several cleaning methods suggested by EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and this standard information pretty much for a small area.
Method 1: Wet vacuum (in the case of porous materials, some mold spores/fragments will remain in the material but will not grow if the material is completely dried). Steam cleaning may be an alternative for carpets and some upholstered furniture.
Method 2: Damp-wipe surfaces with plain water or with water and detergent solution (except wood —use wood floor cleaner); scrub as needed.
Method 3: High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum after the material has been thoroughly dried. Dispose of the contents of the HEPA vacuum in well-sealed plastic bags.
Method 4: Discard - remove water-damaged materials and seal in plastic bags while inside of containment, if present. Dispose of as normal waste. HEPA vacuum area after it is dried.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Minimum: Gloves, N-95 respirator, goggles/eye protection
- Limited: Gloves, N-95 respirator or half-face respirator with HEPA filter, disposable overalls, goggles/eye protection
- Full: Gloves, disposable full body clothing, head gear, foot coverings, full-face respirator with HEPA filter
Limited: Use polyethylene sheeting ceiling to floor around affected area with a slit entry and covering flap; maintain area under negative pressure with HEPA filtered fan unit. Block supply and return air vents within containment area.
Full: Use two layers of fire-retardant polyethylene sheeting with one airlock chamber. Maintain area under negative pressure with HEPA filtered fan exhausted outside of building. Block supply and return air vents within containment area.
Do I need Air Samples?
The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) says that in most cases where visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary. Since no EPA or other federal limits have been set for mold or mold spores, sampling cannot be used to check a building’s compliance with federal mold standards.
However At ServiClean Inc we encourage you to do so, get few air samples at the beginning and few samples after we finish the remediation. One of these samples includes outside air; the results of this test can give us an idea if the clean up was successful or if there is another area that we didn’t include in our initial inspection.
Our goal is to reduce the number of indoor spores to the outdoor area or cleaner.

Important Tips:
Removal of dry soil Vacuuming is the most significant element in the maintenance of carpet and the overall appearance of the facility. Research has shown that 85% of the soil tracked into a building is dry, and the other 15% is oily. Vacuums are designed to control this dry soil. Frequent vacuuming removes particulate soil from the surface before it works down into the pile where it is more difficult to remove. Walking on the carpet accelerates the rate at which the particles get deep into the pile. Heavily trafficked areas, such as entrances and major corridors, should be vacuumed at least once a day.
Stains: Get at stains quickly, 99% of all stains can be removed by one cleaning agent or another if they are cleaned in the first few days. The longer a stain chemically reacts with the carpet the harder it will be to remove it. Never dig or brush spots. The proper procedure is to scrape the spot towards the middle and then tamp the spot into the white towel or cloth using a brush or other tamping devices. A meat tenderizer makes a great tamping tool.
Reduction of soiling The use of walk-off mats at transition areas from hard surface to carpet is important. Walk-off mats can greatly reduce the amount of soil entering a facility by normal traffic. They are also necessary at service entrances with direct contact to the outside.
Basic Pet Stain removal
Time is essential. You need to get to the stain as quickly as you can. When you do this, you are able to get most of the liquid out of the carpet or off the flooring before it sets into it. The first thing that you need to do then is to get clean, white paper towels and absorb as much of the mess from the carpet as possible. Liquid should be blotted out of the carpet until you can not get any more out. Do not scrub it!
After you do this, there may still be some stain that needs to be removed. You will then need to work on removing it. The first thing that you can do is to dilute vinegar in a bottle 50/50 with warm water. Spray this onto the stain and allow it to dry. This will neutralize the stain and it will not be noticeable.
Or, try a solution of vinegar, baking soda and water in a spray bottle. A few teaspoons of baking soda will cause a reaction with the chemical that will also help to remove that stain, even if it has been sitting there for a while.
To neutralize the smell of the urine, sprinkle baking soda dry onto the carpeting in the spot. Allow it to absorb the odors there and then vacuum it up.
In an emergency situation, you can treat the stain with club soda. Or, use seltzer water. Then, go back and treat it as you normally would.
How often should I have my carpets professionally cleaned?
That would depend on the number of adults, children and of course PETS, that live in your home. Every 3 to 12 months is the average. We recommend cleaning your Traffic Areas every six months.

Do It Yourself Tips:
Getting the Upholstery Stains Out
Maintaining a clean home is part of having a happy home where people enjoy living. With furniture, upholstery is just one aspect but an important one. Think about all the times people have eaten on the sofa, dropping bits of food or drink that leave stains. Then you have the dirty feet, dirty clothing, and just everyday wear and tear that can leave upholstery looking dirty and drab. As you are about to discover, getting those stains out does not have to be painful.
The most important thing to remember when cleaning upholstery is to consider the fabric. If you are unsure, you can check with the manufacturer’s information. Then, before you start in cleaning a large stain, we recommend you work first on an inconspicuous area to ensure no discoloration or damage is done. With that done, the following are a few of the more common stains found on upholstery and methods for removing them.
Common Stains:
- The family sits around to watch a movie and in comes the hot, buttered popcorn. Although everyone is careful, pieces can fall and then you have a grease stain. For butter, the best option is to choose a dry cleaning solvent, which can be found at grocery and retail stores. Apply a little onto a clean, white cloth and blot at the stain, never rub. Next, mix one tablespoon of a mild, ph-balanced detergent with one cup of warm water. Again, blot at the stain. Next, using another towel, sponge the solvent and detergent off with clean, warm water and allow the spot to dry.
- Cheese is another food product that is seen spilled on upholstery. Again, things like nachos are a favorite snack food but they leave stains. For cheese, mix one teaspoon of mild, ph-balanced detergent with one cup of warm water. With a clean, white towel, blot at the cheese stain. Then mix one tablespoon of regular ammonia with one-half cup of water, again blotting the stain. Finally, blot the stain with clean water to remove any detergent or ammonia and let the area dry.
- Sipping coffee on an upholstered chair or sofa is everyday occurrence. To get rid of a coffee stain, mix one teaspoon of a mild, ph-balanced detergent with one cup of warm water, then blot from the outside in. Follow this with blotting the stain with a mixture of one-third cup white vinegar with two-thirds cup water. When finished, use a clean, white towel to absorb any excess, allow the area to dry.
Upholstery cleaning tips are important since dust settles onto fabric more than hard surfaces. Therefore, regular cleaning to keep your upholstery looking and smelling clean is essential. In fact, we recommend you clean your upholstery furniture once every two months. Typically, you can use your regular vacuum cleaner with the appropriate attachment to keep it clean. Just keeping the dust off will help your furniture last much longer. Then when necessary, use the above tips for removing stains. With this, you can enjoy your favorite sofa or chair without having to spend hard-earned money on new furniture.
